Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) is an evidence based therapy model that helps clients to learn and practice new skills that assist with regulating emotions, distress tolerance, boundary setting, self-advocacy, and mindfulness. Dialectical means 'the existence of opposites', and this therapy intervention helps clients to recognize that their feelings and experiences are valid, and that positive change is necessary to reach their goals.
DBT programming is offered in a variety of treatment models. The Aspen Wellness Centre offers DBT as a therapeutic intervention used in Individual Therapy Sessions.
During a therapy session using DBT, the clinician works with the client to help them to first identify therapeutic goals. Then, DBT related skills and strategies are taught and practiced in the session. The clinician provides the client with on-going support as they work on applying these skills and strategies in their daily lives. The ultimate goal is for the client to develop a sense of mastery of the DBT skills, helping them to feel emotionally regulated and empowered in their daily lives.
Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) is an effective therapy for children, youth and adults of all ages.
It is often used to treat:
Myth: DBT & CBT are the same.
Fact: DBT and CBT are not the same. While DBT and CBT are both types of talk therapy, CBT focuses on identifying and challenging negative or irrational thoughts and behaviours. DBT focuses on accepting and validating thoughts, feelings and behaviours and then learning strategies to change patterns that are not healthy or helpful.
Myth: DBT is the same as mindfulness.
Fact: DBT does include mindfulness based skills and techniques, but it also involves emotional regulation skill building, reflective practice, distress tolerance and more. The DBT clinician must first work with the client to understand the client's history and presenting concerns in order to develop a treatment plan catered to their unique needs.
