Cost can present a significant barrier for clients seeking high quality mental health support. Non-profit agencies do a good job of providing free or subsidized services, but clients often report frustration around lengthy wait times, or a lack of choice over the provider they work with, or the services that are available.
At the Aspen Wellness Centre, we strive to provide high quality, trauma informed mental health services that are accessible and flexible to meet the needs of our clients. In order to provide service options for clients who do not have insurance/benefits or cannot afford to pay out of pocket to work with one of our fully registered clinicians, we are pleased to offer low-cost mental health therapy sessions with our Clinical Intern Therapist.
A Clinical Intern Therapist is a university student who is completing their graduate degree in Counselling, Psychology or Clinical Social Work. As part of their program requirements, they must complete a field placement where they hone and practice their skills as a student therapist under the supervision of an experienced therapist. Many clinical interns already have a great deal of lived and work experience in their area of specialization, and their internship is their opportunity to apply their skills in a therapeutic setting.
Added Value: Working with a clinical intern therapist is like getting two therapists for the price of one since the clinical intern therapist is under the supervision of an experienced therapist, who can support them with guidance, resources and new perspectives on how to best support their clients.
Low-Cost: Our Clinical Intern Therapist offers sessions at a rate of $55/session with additional sliding scale fees available based on client need. The pay structure for our clinical intern therapist is based on a 'pay what you can' model to ensure services are accessible to clients and fees are not a barrier.
Immediate Availability: Our Clinical Intern therapist is always accepting new clients and very rarely has a waitlist. This ensures clients can access services efficiently, and having on-going appointments at a frequency that suits their needs.
Flexible & Convenient: Appointments are available in person at our Southeast Edmonton location, or via telehealth for clients located within Alberta. There are a variety of appointment times available that may include weekdays, evenings and weekends.
Every Clinical Intern Therapist has a unique skillset based on their background, training and experience, but typically they can support clients with the following types of concerns:
