Migraines are more than just headaches, they can be completely debilitating neurological events that easily disrupt your daily life. Fortunately, there are multiple options for managing migraines, from lifestyle adjustments to medication as well as alternative therapies. Here, we will explore some of the most effective treatment options available.

Medications for Migraine Relief

Always consult with your doctor or pharmacist before taking a new medication.

Medications for migraines can be separated into two main categories:

Acute Medications: These are taken at the onset of a migraine in order to reduce symptoms, and are typically available over the counter

● Ibuprofen (e.g., Advil)

● Aspirin

● Acetaminophen (e.g., Tylenol)

Preventative Medications: These are taken to prevent the frequency and intensity of migraines, these may require a prescription from your doctor

● Beta-blockers (e.g., propranolol) to regulate blood flow

● Antidepressants (e.g., amitriptyline) to stabilize serotonin levels

● Anticonvulsants (e.g., topiramate) reduces overactive nerve signals

● CGRP inhibitors (e.g., erenumab) targets proteins linked to migraine pain

Lifestyle/Dietary Modifications

Adjusting your routine can also notably reduce migraine frequency and severity. Try some of the following:

● Manage stress: mindfulness, yoga, and meditation can help reduce stress-related migraines

● Prioritize sleep: being low on sleep greatly increases the risk of a migraine

● Monitor your diet: some foods, like processed meats, cheese, and alcohol can trigger migraines

● Stay hydrated: dehydration is a very common trigger, so do your best to drink water throughout the day

Alternative and Complementary Methods

Many individuals also find relief through holistic methods, either by themselves or alongside medical treatments. These methods include:

● Acupuncture: acupuncture can help reduce stress, as well as be directly targeted to relieve migraines

● Massage therapy: regular massage can relieve the tension that leads to migraines

● Herbal supplements: magnesium, riboflavin (B2), and coenzyme Q10 have been shown to reduce the severity of migraines

Finding the right treatment plan is key. Migraine treatment is highly individualized, and what works for one person may not work for you. If you experience frequent or severe migraines, we recommend consulting a healthcare professional to develop a tailored approach can greatly increase your odds of successfully reducing your migraines.
